The Sea Point Dive Center, operated by Professional Scuba Schools, offers a unique opportunity to witness the luxury and leisure enjoyed by Roman leaders like Caesar and Nero through a visit to the underwater archaeological remains of Baia.
The Baia Underwater Archaeological Park was established in 2002 and is situated in the Gulf of Pozzuoli. It contains the remains of numerous Roman villas, mosaics, and statues. The dives, which reach a depth of about 15 feet (5 meters), are suitable for divers with all levels of certification.
“Typically, visitors to Italy focus on the beauty above the water,” said Tiziana Schiano Moriello, PSS Instructor Trainer and Owner of the Sea Point Dive Center. “But there are marvels lying just below the surface that only a privileged few have witnessed.”
Some of the sites that can be explored during a dive in the park include “Ninfeo,” “Villa dei Pisoni,” and “Villa a Protiro,” among others. The Villa dei Pisoni was originally owned by the family of Calpurnius Piso, who conspired to assassinate Nero. When the plot failed, Nero seized the villa. Visitors can still see remains of the colonnades, corridors, and thermal baths here. At Villa a Protrio, you can marvel at the remains of frescoes and mosaics. There are several other sites that continue to reveal the remnants of this Roman getaway, reminiscent of Las Vegas, where the powerful and elite came to frolic, feast, and simply have fun.
