Invasive Species Removal in Tetiaroa Atoll Helps Heal Island-Ocean Ecosystems

Island Conservation, in partnership with Tetiaroa Society and The Brando Resort, has successfully carried out a crucial operation to remove two species of rats from the motus (small islands) of Tetiaroa Atoll. This significant project will have a positive impact on seabird populations and other species that connect island and marine ecosystems. Over time, the restored island has the potential to serve as a sanctuary for critically endangered species like the Polynesian Ground Dove and the Tuamotu Sandpiper. Additionally, the recovery of coral reefs and vibrant marine life will further enhance the marine ecosystem.

Island Conservation, Tetiaroa Society, & The Brando resort collaborated to remove invasive species and restore island-ocean ecosystems in Tetiaroa atoll.

Tetiaroa Atoll, once inhabited by movie star Marlon Brando, has experienced significant biodiversity loss due to the introduction of invasive rats by early settlers. This ecological degradation has put native plants and animals at risk. To address this issue, Island Conservation joined forces with Tetiaroa Society, which runs the Tetiaroa Atoll Restoration Program aimed at eliminating invasive species and restoring the island’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The Brando resort, an eco-friendly hotel serving as the gateway to the island, also participated in the partnership.

After facing multiple disruptions due to the pandemic, the operation was finally carried out in June and July 2022.
