A 23-year-old Russian man has been attacked and killed by a large tiger shark close to shore at a popular beach near Hurghada.

The tragic tourist, who had arrived several months ago with his father, was named in Russia by the Baza news outlet as Vladimir Popov. His girlfriend was also in the water with him at the time of the incident, but managed to make it safely to the shore at Dream Beach.

A graphic video shot by a beachgoer captured the entire horrific incident. In the video, the man can be seen desperately shouting ‘Papa, Papa’ as he tries to swim for the shoreline, but the shark repeatedly pulls him under the water. Onlookers can be heard screaming and shouting for the man to swim.

The tiger shark was soon caught in nets and brought on to the shore.

Attacks like this are extremely rare, but it doesn’t make it any less tragic, especially when it happened so close to the shore.

Last July, as reported by Scuba Diver, 68-year-old Austrian Elisabeth Sauer was attacked by a shark and, while she made it back to shore, she died as a result of losing an arm and a leg. The badly disfigured body of a second woman, thought to be a Romanian woman in her 40s, was found just a few hundred metres away from where Sauer was attacked, later on the same day. An oceanic whitetip shark was suspected of being the culprit for those incidents.
