A group of divers from the Valhalla liveaboard have successfully discovered a German World War One U-boat that sunk off the coast of Shetland in 1917. The submarine, which was laying mines in the convoy channel between Orkney and Shetland, encountered technical issues and began to flood after going below its maximum dive depth. It managed to resurface, but was then attacked and sunk by two Royal Navy destroyers. The remains of the U-boat have been known since the mid-1980s, but the team from Valhalla became the first technical divers to explore and positively identify it as the SM UC-55. Jacob Mackenzie, one of the divers on the team, captured footage of the submarine and emphasized the somberness of the site, recognizing that it is essentially a grave for the men who lost their lives. The discovery provides valuable historical insight into the events of World War One.
