A Kemp’s Ridley turtle called Tally, named after Talacre Beach where it was found in poor condition in North Wales, has been successfully released back into the wild. Tally spent several months recovering at the Anglesey Sea Zoo after being rescued from the beach in November 2021, thousands of miles away from its native waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

Frankie Hobro, director and owner of Anglesey Sea Zoo, accompanied Tally on a long flight from the UK to the United States. Working with the Gulf Centre for Sea Turtle Research in Texas, they released Tally back into the wild. A satellite tag was attached to track her movements in the coming months.

Anglesey Sea Zoo is currently raising funds to construct the first dedicated turtle rescue and rehabilitation facility in the UK. This facility will provide specialist care to rescue and save more turtles and improve the chances of survival for every live turtle washed up on a British beach.

The UK is experiencing more cases of cold-stunned turtles due to rising sea temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns. The need for a purpose-built facility is becoming increasingly urgent.

The Sea Zoo currently has Tonni, a juvenile loggerhead turtle, in its care. Tonni washed up on the shore of the Menai Strait in January of this year. After recovering well, Tonni is now in the pre-release stage of care and is expected to be flown south in the Atlantic for release back into the wild in a few months.
