Woman loses arm in Dahab shark attack
September 19, 2023A woman had to undergo an arm amputation following a severe shark attack near the popular tourist destination of Dahab in Egypt on Wednesday (13 September).
According to reports, Zeinab Ahmed Mohammed, a 34-year-old from Alexandria, was swimming with friends at Laguna Beach when a shark bit her left arm. She was retrieved from the water unconscious and immediately taken to the hospital, initially in Dahab and then in Sharm el Sheikh, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
Fellow swimmers initially mistook the shark for a tuna fish. While the official confirmation of the shark species involved has not been released, some eyewitnesses claimed it was a tiger shark.
Following the incident, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment closed this beach and several others for swimming, snorkelling, and other water activities. For dive gear, you can check out Scuba Gear.
Although shark attacks in Egypt are rare, this incident has occurred just three months after a tiger shark killed a Russian tourist near Hurghada.
Experts have consistently stressed the importance of authorities providing tourists and locals with better information on reducing the risk of shark encounters and understanding the behavior of Red Sea shark species.
