Aberdeen BSAC 67 wins 2023 Heinke Trophy
December 16, 2023Aquatic Club, located in Northeast Scotland, has achieved a remarkable turnaround by winning the prestigious Heinke Trophy 2023, BSAC’s top award, after being reduced to just a few active club divers. The Heinke Trophy, introduced in 1958, is presented annually to the club that has made the greatest contribution to the interests of its members and BSAC. Aberdeen, as the 2023 winners, will also receive £1,000.
Jim Burke, Chair of Aberdeen, expressed his delight, stating, “We were ecstatic and relieved when we received the news that our club had been chosen for the 2023 Heinke Trophy! This recognition means a lot to our members and is a true testament to our efforts in promoting diving in Northeast Scotland.
“In 2019, our club was struggling with only around 20 members, and only a handful were actively diving. A few dedicated members prevented the club from collapsing and devised a strategy to expand the club, increase diversity, enhance the training program, embark on more diving expeditions, and, most importantly, have fun.”
“We are incredibly proud of our achievements. We now have over 100 members, offer training at all levels, organize numerous expeditions every year, have over 40% female membership, support a large group of divers under 18, and have a growing Diving for All (DfA) program.”
“The club’s success is a result of the enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work of our members. The application process for the Heinke Trophy brought us closer together, revealing hidden talents amongst our members, such as skilled drafters, graphic designers, and English language experts!”
“We are a fun club with an inspiring story, and winning the 2023 Heinke Trophy is the icing on the cake. The cash prize will assist us in acquiring a new club RIB.”
In addition to Aberdeen, two other BSAC clubs, Marlin and University of Nottingham, received certificates of commendation for their outstanding entries.
Phil Harrison MBE, one of the judges on the Heinke adjudication panel, praised Aberdeen for their achievement, stating, “Aberdeen was a highly deserving winner among a competitive field. Their activities in 2023, including extensive training, diving, and scientific projects, such as discovering new wreck sites, coupled with strong leadership and teamwork, truly stood out. The club appears very active and has a fantastic atmosphere.”
Harrison also highlighted the focus on increased diversity in the clubs of Aberdeen, Marlin, and University of Nottingham, which played a significant role in their success.
