Ground-breaking Avatar mask wins Good Design Award

The remarkable full-face mask designed for Avatar: The Way of Water has rightfully earned the prestigious Best in Class award at the Australian Good Design Awards. The awards, which have been setting the global standard for good design for over 60 years, showcase outstanding design and innovation to an international audience.

Each year, the awards attract cutting-edge design projects from around the world, celebrating excellence in design, architecture, engineering, research, fashion, and social impact. The entries span a wide range of sectors and industries, showcasing everything from everyday product design to the creation of buildings, systems, and processes that support businesses and communities.

The Avatar dive mask design was a collaborative effort involving director James Cameron, Supervising Master Diver John Garvin, Nathan Burke, Choor-Hong Tan from Design + Industry, Lans Hansen from Weta Workshop, and Deborah Scott, the costume designer. John’s son Ben even had the opportunity to test-dive the groundbreaking mask in their backyard pool.

The incredible achievement of this mask’s design is highlighted by its recognition at the Australian Good Design Awards, solidifying its place as a remarkable piece of innovation for Avatar: The Way of Water.
